Total Joint Replacement Timeline
Day 1:
In a discussion with the doctor about chronic knee or hip pain thats impeding normal activities, the decision is made to have a total joint replacement.
One Week Before Surgery:
An orientation class at the Total Joint Center explains what to expect during and after the procedure. Exercises are prescribed to do at home over the next week to strengthen muscles around the joint, which will help speed recovery.
Day of Surgery:
The surgery is performed in the morning, under a spinal anesthetic if possible. Rehab begins immediately after surgery. Some patients may be up and walking around with a walker that afternoon.
Day After Surgery:
Rehab continues in a group with other joint replacement patients. The typical stay at the hospital is two to four days.
Night Before Discharge:
A gourmet meal is served to each patient being discharged to celebrate.
The First Two Weeks After Surgery:
Physical therapy sessions begin at the Center within a few days of discharge.
One Month After Surgery:
With minimally invasive surgery, walking unaided is typical and return to work also may be possible. With the standard procedure, walking has improved, allowing one to ease back into normal life.
The timeline represents general aspects of the total joint program at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital.
